Audley Farm

Shenandoah Valley Excellence in Horses, Cattle, Hay, and Events

A FARM With A Presidential Connection

With roots reaching back to George Washington and his family, Audley Farm remains an enduring symbol of American heritage.

For over 250 years, Audley Farm has been a part of American History.

Audley was founded in 1749 when Lord Thomas Fairfax granted Colonel George William Fairfax a 3,000-acre estate. In 1764, a cousin of George Washington, Warner Washington, bought half of the estate. From that point on, Audley remained in the Washington family for 138 years.

The most well-known of Audley’s residents was Eleanor “Nelly” Custis Lewis. Nelly was the youngest granddaughter of Martha Washington. She was raised at Mount Vernon and enjoyed an affectionate daughter-like relationship with her step-grandfather, George Washington

Her historic residence, Audley House, has been completely restored and is now the focal point of Audley Farm.

Situated at the northernmost edge of the Shenandoah Valley, the historic Audley Farm spans 3,000 acres of picturesque pastures, offering stunning views of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains.

Our expertise includes thoroughbred race horses, registered Black Angus cattle, premium beef sales, hay farming and sales, and special events, each founded on the cornerstone of tradition and performance.

Audley: From The Old Meadow

Our HORSE Program

Audley Farm has been a cornerstone of excellence in Thoroughbred breeding and training for more than a century. Nestled in the heart of Clarke County, Virginia, our equine program is built on a foundation of superior bloodlines, expert horsemanship, and an unwavering commitment to quality. With world-class facilities, expansive pastures, and a dedicated team, we provide the ideal environment for raising and developing top-tier equine athletes. Every horse in our care benefits from meticulous attention, ensuring they have the foundation to succeed at the highest levels of competition.

Audley Farm has a proud history of producing exceptional Thoroughbreds that have left a lasting impact on the racing world. Among our most distinguished graduates are Bodemeister, the 2012 Arkansas Derby champion and Kentucky Derby runner-up; Eishin Boston, a multiple stakes winner in Japan; Mandy’s Gold, a Grade 1-winning mare with over $1 million in earnings; and Greyvitos, a champion two-year-old colt and multiple graded stakes winner. These horses exemplify the strength, speed, and spirit that define the Audley legacy.

Today, we continue to build upon that tradition with our latest racing prospect, 3-year-old filly, Quadra. This promising horse represents the next generation of Audley excellence, carrying forward the legacy of precision breeding and expert training that has defined our program for decades. As stewards of this historic farm, we take pride in preserving our heritage while embracing innovation, ensuring that Audley Farm remains at the forefront of Thoroughbred racing for years to come.

Our Cattle Program

Black Angus cattle first arrived at Audley Farm in 1903, introduced by then-owner Archibald Cummins. Decades later, in 1978, new owner Hubertus Liebrecht expanded the operation with the acquisition of Morgan Springs Farm. This expansion brought significant renovations, new barns, and a stronger focus on Aberdeen Angus—a breed perfectly suited to Virginia’s climate, thriving on pastures scattered with limestone rocks. A few years later, Monterey Farm was added, further increasing pastureland dedicated to cattle.

In the early 2000s, Audley Farm embraced a more scientific approach to breeding, introducing artificial insemination (AI) to enhance genetic quality. By 2015, we deepened our commitment to elite genetics, expanding our purebred, registered Black Angus seed stock and beef operation.

Today, we provide top-tier bulls and donor females to cattlemen at local, regional, and national levels. Through advanced breeding techniques—including in vitro fertilization, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer—we produce cattle with precise genetic profiles, helping modern ranchers build stronger herds.
